Located in the heart of Deep Ellum, is Drugstore Cowboy. A hybrid between a coffee shop and a bar. It attempts to create a vintage concept, but it resembles more an abandoned warehouse. The decor consists of blue planes of glass, exposed brick walls, big wooden, picnic-like tables, a small section with old couches, and a large wooden bar accompanied by wooden bar stools. Although I have previously praised similar decors, like Opening Bell Coffee and Mudsmith, Drugstore Cowboy fails to impress me with its try-hard hipster atmosphere. I also did not sense a friendly vibe from the baristas. I could tell they were biased towards their regular customers or anyone that looks like a stereotypical hipster. Another disappointment is that they do not always serve you in a mug, even if you explicitly tell them that your latte is for here. If you’ve read my previous coffee shop reviews, an important factor in all local coffee shops is to be able to enjoy my latte in a mug with creative latte art! (Yes, I am basic like that.) But atmosphere aside, their coffee does meet my standards. Perhaps it’s because they use coffee beans from Cultivar, which I am a huge fan of; so props to them for that!
At the far end of the shop, there is a small stage for live performances. I hear that this place turns into a more exciting bar with live music in the evenings. I’ll have to come back and see if their night life is any better than their day-time coffee shop. Drugstore Cowboy is relatively new so there is still time for them to grow and improve. But I won’t get my hopes up.
